City-paid life

Coverage for you

The City provides free basic life insurance to you equal to your base salary, up to $50,000.

  • Coverage reduces by 50% when you reach age 70

Coverage for your spouse and children

The City provides free basic life insurance to your eligible dependents equal to $5,000 per qualifying individual

  • You must enroll for your dependents to have coverage

Optional life

Coverage for you

You have the option to purchase additional coverage for yourself in the following increments:

  • 2 x base salary, up to $100,000
  • 4 x base salary, up to $200,000
  • 6 x base salary, up to $300,000

Coverage reduces by:

  • 35% when you reach age 65
  • 50% when you reach age 70
  • 70% when you reach age 75

Coverage for your spouse

You have the option to purchase additional coverage for your spouse in the following increments:

  • $7,500
  • $15,000
  • $22,500

Your spouse coverage may not be more than your total City life insurance (City-paid plus optional).

Signing up

Enrolling when you're newly hired or eligible

  • When you're a new employee (or a newly benefits-eligible employee), you're guaranteed all levels of life insurance coverage
    • Simply select the  coverage you want during your initial benefits enrollment.

Waiting and enrolling later

  • If you decide to wait and apply for additional life insurance during an open enrollment period, coverage is not guaranteed
    • In addition to requesting coverage through the online open enrollment process, you'll need to complete a personal health application
    • The Hartford will review your application and approve or decline your request based on your health

Retiree life

Coverage for retirees

The City provides $7,500 of life insurance to normal retirees whose hire date was before January 1, 2016.

Retiree life

Individuals hired or rehired on or after January 1, 2016 are not eligible for

  • Retiree Life ($7,500)
  • Portability of Supplemental Life (employee or spouse)
